On August 1st, 1966, a sniper rode the elevator to the top floor of the University of Texas Tower and opened fire, holding the campus hostage for 96 minutes. The wake of the ear-ringing gunshots left 16 dead, three dozen wounded, and a shaken nation left trying to understand — marking America’s first mass school shooting.

Inspired by Pamela Colloff ‘s article 96 Minutes, Tower visually spotlights the survivors, witnesses, and heroes of the shooting through moment-by-moment accounts which include the students who were injured, a radio reporter who broadcasted the event live, and the first police officers who responded to the scene. Through the unique combination of rotoscope animations, archival footage, and interviews, Keith Maitland creates a visceral, human-centered recollection on an otherwise devastatingly, hopeless event.
